Forsa Sa'ida
Concert and Lecture on the Ondes Martenot with Nancy Mounir, Julie Normal, and researcher Julia Tieke

About the event
This evening connected the early electronic instruments, Theremin and Ondes Martenot, both patented in 1928, to Arab music (history) and introduces the new project “Fursa Saida”. When the musicologist Mady Humbert-Lavergne suggested using Ondes Martenot in Arab music at the 1932 Cairo Congress, nobody listened. Almost a century later, the instrument finally comes to Egypt, with one of its very few professional players, Julie Normal (Lyon). It’s the beginning of a collaboration between her and multi-instrumentalist Nancy Mounir (Cairo) who plays the Theremin.
Nancy and Julie presented their instruments, while researcher Julia Tieke (Berlin) highlighted a proposal by musicologist Mady Humbert-Lavergne that drew attention to the instrument in 1932, and connected it to her current research on Brigitte Schiffer. Julie, Nancy, and Julia share their ideas and questions, along with music and archival recordings, with the audience. They hope for direct interaction and for seizing a good chance when it comes: Forsa Sa'ida!
