Ein Hod: Avant-Garde Art... A Colonial History
About the Event
In the mid-twentieth century, an unexpected intersection took place between Dada, as an avant-garde artistic movement critical of European epistemic logic, and political Zionism, which sought to colonize Palestine. The artist and architect Marcel Janco played a prominent role in weaving this intersection: he traveled to Palestine as a settler in 1941 and initiated settlement activities that culminated in his involvement with the institutions of the Zionist state after the Nakba of 1948.
This discussion addresses that intersection, examining the relationship between colonialism and art in Palestine, and the parallels between art's founding role in the colonial project and its current role in the ongoing urban transformations in cities such as Haifa and Jaffa.
