Listening Sessions: Ali Essa and Shady E
Our two guests took us on a journey through jazz music in Egypt, through their selection of musical pieces and their experience.
About the Event
In this session, our two guests take us on a journey through jazz in Egypt, through their selections of musical pieces and their own experience. Over two hours and more, we try to approach music as a space for thinking, analysis, and critique, and as a tool for connecting individual and collective experiences.

Ali Essa
Self-taught at first, Ali Essa later studied under composer Abdu Dagher and oud player Hazem Shaheen. His compositions draw on diverse influences, rooted in the traditions of classical and folk Egyptian music.

Shady El-Husseiny
Shady regularly performs with singer Mariam Saleh, Palestinian oud player Tamer Abu Ghazaleh, and accordionist and singer Yousra El-Hawary, and plays with the band Darwasha. He also helped found the Choral Project in 2010.
