About the Workshop

Over six sessions, participants will explore:

- What literary editing is, and its different stages. - The role of the literary editor in working with a text, and the limits of that role. - Working on the draft technically, stylistically, and linguistically, sharpening its precision in structure and context. - Developing the text and refining its rhythm and style while preserving the writer's voice. - The difference between editing original Arabic texts and translated ones. - Reviewing the text and preparing it for publication. - Practical exercises editing texts from different literary genres, applying the concepts covered.

About the workshop instructor, Mohamed Kheir

A poet, novelist, writing trainer, and professional literary editor, Mohamed Kheir has edited dozens of literary works for various Egyptian and Arab publishers, many of which have gone on to win prestigious literary awards.

His major works include the poetry collections Gifts of Solitude, The Bad Habits of the Past, and The Impossible, and the novels A Closer Sky, Slipping, and Sleep Stage. He won the Sawiris Cultural Award twice, for his short story collections Radio Ghosts (2011) and Eyelash (2016). His novel Slipping was translated into English and won the Saif Ghobash Banipal Prize for Arabic Literary Translation in 2022, and the English translation of Sleep Stage, by Robin Moger, was published this past May. Mohamed Kheir has taken part in numerous literary programs and events in Egypt and abroad, including the International Writing Program at the University of Iowa in 2022.
